Overview
Effective page layout helps readers navigate information, understand hierarchy, and engage with content. The way text, images, and visual elements are arranged can shape how information is accessed and understood.
In this course, you'll explore the fundamentals of page layout and publication design using Adobe InDesign software. Through topics such as typography, multi-page document design, page structure, image placement, object management, tables, tabs, parent pages, and document setup, you'll examine how text and visual elements work together to create well-organized publications.
Through practical exercises and an applied final project, this live online micro-credential course focuses on working with text, objects, page layouts, and production settings. You'll bring these elements together in a tri-fold brochure, prepare files for output, and present the design decisions behind your work.
By course completion, you'll be better prepared to contribute to publication and document-design projects. You'll also gain practical experience organizing content, creating professional page layouts, and preparing files for print and digital distribution.
This course is ideal if you:
- are interested in typography, publishing, editorial design, or graphic design
- want to learn Adobe InDesign and explore the fundamentals of page layout and publication design
- create document-based communications as part of your work, business, or personal projects
- plan to continue building your Adobe Creative Cloud skills.
There are no prerequisites for this course; DSGN 007 Adobe Illustrator 1 is strongly recommended.
Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:
- create a clean, well-structured multi-page text layout, demonstrating control over typographic hierarchy, spacing, readability, and organization
- create, select, and style type in InDesign to produce creative, conceptual, and technically skilled page layouts and publication designs
- create, organize, and style objects including shapes and images in InDesign to enhance layout concepts
- develop complex page layouts using the pages panel
- create, organize, and style type tables using the table style options function
- save, package, and export pre-flighted documents for print
- design a complex and compelling collection of typographic art that showcases your conceptual, creative, and technical skills and communicates your artistic process.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account.

Technology
To be successful in this course, you’ll need:
- Access to your own computer or laptop that meets system requirements for Adobe InDesign and standard hardware/software requirements to use D2L
- Functional webcam and microphone
- Internet access.
Though not required, a second monitor or additional device may be helpful during live online sessions.
Before the start of the first class, please have Adobe Creative Cloud downloaded and installed on your computer. Educational pricing is available, and you can use your SAIT “edu” email address as proof of student status to access the software at a reduced rate.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
