Overview
From logos and icons to illustrations and marketing graphics, Adobe Illustrator is widely used to create artwork for print and digital communications. Understanding how vector artwork is created, refined, and prepared for different applications is essential to producing professional-quality graphics.
In this course, you'll explore the fundamentals of vector-based design using Adobe Illustrator software. Through topics such as shapes, colour, gradients, typography, brushes, layers, and drawing tools, you'll examine how visual concepts are transformed into graphic assets for a variety of applications.
This live online micro-credential course combines practical exercises with applied project work. You'll complete a series of hands-on activities, develop a personal logo, and bring your work together in a stationery package and presentation. Project work reinforces Illustrator tools, techniques, and workflows as you develop increasingly complex vector artwork and design projects.
By course completion, you'll be prepared to create vector graphics for print and digital media. You'll also have experience presenting original work and explaining the conceptual, creative, and technical decisions behind it.
This course is ideal if you:
- want to learn Adobe Illustrator and explore the fundamentals of vector-based design
- create visual content for marketing, communications, business, or personal projects
- are interested in graphic design, branding, or digital media
- plan to continue building your Adobe Creative Cloud skills.
There are no prerequisites for this course; DSGN 014 Introduction to Visual Design is strongly recommended.
Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:
- navigate the Illustrator interface to select the appropriate tools, artboards, menu items, and panels to create well-designed vector art
- create, transform, stack, and reshape basic objects in Illustrator to produce creative, conceptual, and technically-skilled vector designs
- create and apply colours and gradients in Illustrator that enhance your design concepts
- select and use the most appropriate Illustrator type tools to convey your design’s concept
- use the pen tool to create and modify paths to develop complex, technically-grounded, and visually-engaging designs
- create and modify brushes in Illustrator to enhance your design’s effectiveness
- create and modify layers using different tools and techniques to develop an effective workflow process;
- design a complex and compelling collection of vector art that showcases your conceptual, creative, and technical skills and communicate your design process.

To be successful in this course, you’ll need:
- Access to your own computer or laptop that meets system requirements for Adobe Illustrator and standard hardware/software requirements for D2L
- Functional webcam and microphone
- Internet access.
Though not required, a second monitor or additional device may be helpful during live online sessions.
Before the start of the first class, please have Adobe Creative Cloud downloaded and installed on your computer. Educational pricing is available, and you can use your SAIT “edu” email address as proof of student status to access the software at a reduced rate.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
