Overview

SAIT's EMR certificate program is approved and meets the training program standards set by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACoP) and prepares you with entry-level skills/knowledge/attitude (competencies) required to work as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in emergency prehospital care in Alberta.

Delivered by qualified instructors, the program combines online-managed self-study of theoretical concepts with mandatory classroom lab and Ride Along shifts where you'll observe, be assessed and learn practical skills. You must be motivated and organized to learn the required material through self-directed study and skill practice.

To be eligible to take this program, you must be at least 18 years of age and provide proof of the following:

  • you’ve completed the following required high school-level courses:
    • at least 50% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2; and,
    • at least 50% in Math 10C or Pure Math 10 or Math 20-1 or Math 20-2 or Applied Math 20; and
    • at least 50% Biology 30 (or SAIT’s Open Studies course, ANPH-209 Anatomy & Physiology); AND
  • English language proficiency - we will accept English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 as proof

Program outline

To earn this certificate, you are required to successfully complete the four courses listed below and a ride-along. Completing EMRG 001 - Emergency Response Fundamentals is required before taking EMRG 003 - Advanced Emergency Response and EMRG 102 - ITLS Basic Provider courses. EMRG 006 - Emergency Response Driver Training has no prerequisite and may be taken at any time in the program. The 16-hour Ride Along requirement can be booked and completed after successful completion of EMRG 001.

How to apply for this certificate

Once you have registered for any course offered in this certificate, you will be automatically eligible to complete the certificate. You will have up to three years to complete this program. You may track your progression by signing in to your Continuing Education student account.

Certifications and professional designations

Upon successful completion of all the required courses in this certificate program and the Ride Along, you’ll receive an electronically issued official SAIT Certificate of Achievement and transcript. Note that parchments are not issued for individual courses.

To work as a designated EMR professional in Alberta, you must be registered with the ACoP and hold an active practice permit. You must complete the registration application process including examination within one year of having completed your SAIT certificate program.

This program also prepares you for admission into SAIT’s 10-month, full-time Primary Care Paramedic certificate program.

Costs

This program consists of four mandatory courses with varying fees. Fees include access to all course-related materials and resources found in Brightspace (D2L). Note: there is an additional cost for purchasing your EMR uniform, which is required for the Ride Along component. More information will be provided once you start the program.

Upon successful completion of this program and with an active practice permit from the Alberta College of Paramedics, you may find employment as a registered EMR working in various settings.
