Overview
This certificate program is approved and meets the training program standards set by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACoP) and prepares you with entry-level skills/knowledge/attitude (competencies) required to work as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in emergency prehospital care in Alberta.
Delivered by qualified instructors, the program combines online-managed self-study of theoretical concepts with mandatory classroom lab and Ride Along shifts where you'll observe, be assessed and learn practical skills. You must be motivated and organized to learn the required material through self-directed study and skill practice.
To be eligible to take this program, you must provide proof that:
- you’re 18 years of age or older (provide picture ID proof)
- you hold a valid class 5-GDL driver's license or higher
- you’ve completed the following required high school-level courses:
- at least 50% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2; and,
- at least 50% in Math 10C or Pure Math 10 or Math 20-1 or Math 20-2 or Applied Math 20; and
- at least 50% Biology 30 (or SAIT’s Open Studies course, ANPH-209 Anatomy & Physiology); and
- demonstrate English language proficiency and meet the following requirements or equivalents. We will accepted English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 as proof.

Bridging the gap with hands-on industry training for Emergency Medical Responder students
Partnership with Aaron Paramedical Services supports both students and the health-care industry — whether they’re beginning a career as an Emergency Medical Responder or continuing their studies.

Program outline
To successfully complete this certificate, you are required to complete four mandatory courses and a ride-along to complete this program.
Completing EMRG-001 is required before taking EMRG-003 and EMRG-102 courses. We recommend taking EMRG-102 last. During the registration process for EMRG-001, you will be required to upload documents as proof you have met the eligibility requirements for this program.
Required courses & electives
How to apply for this certificate
Once you have registered for any course offered in this certificate, you will be automatically eligible to complete the certificate. You will have up to three years to complete this program. You may track your progression by signing in to your Continuing Education student account.
Certifications and professional designations
Upon successful completion of all the required courses in this certificate program and a 16-hour ride along training component, you’ll receive an electronically issued SAIT Certificate of Achievement and transcript.
You’ll be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account. Please note parchments are not issued for individual courses.
To work as a designated EMR professional in Alberta, you must be registered with the ACoP and hold an active practice permit. You must complete the registration application process including examination within one year of having completed your SAIT certificate program.
This program also prepares you for admission into SAIT’s 10-month, full-time Primary Care Paramedic certificate program.
Costs
This program consists of 4 mandatory courses with varying fees. Fees include access to all course-related materials and resources found in Brightspace (D2L).

Upon successful completion of this program and with an active practice permit from ACoP, you may find employment as a registered EMR working in the following settings.
