Overview
The Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) course covers the theory of operation and some applications of semi-automatic processes. Laboratory welding exercises will work with a mild steel plate. You will also learn about various metal transfers, gases and welding positions during your training.
This SAIT Micro-credential course is designed to teach beginner welding skills and is not a substitute for apprenticeship training. To work as a welder in Alberta, you must either hold a recognized trade certificate or be a registered apprentice in the trade.
You must be at least 18 years old to register for this course.
Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:
- use safe working practices while performing GMAW welding processes
- perform the following practical weld tests:
- 2F on 3/8” Plate Using the GMAW Process with Stringer beads
- 3F on 3/8” Plate Using the GMAW Process with a Down Hand Root and an Up Hand Fill & Cap
- 2F on 3/8” Plate Using the FCAW Process with Stringer beads
- 1F on 3/8” Plate Using the GMAW Process for the Root and Using the FCAW Process For The Fill & Cap

Textbook and reading list
Included in the purchase of this course, you'll receive:

- Course materials/handouts distributed in class.
Technology
To access D2L, you’ll need:
- Your own computer or laptop with standard hardware/software requirements
- Internet access.
You are not required to bring your laptop to class.
Additional supplies
SAIT will provide access to required tools, equipment and facility for this course.
You'll need to bring the following personal protective equipment (PPE), starting the first day of class:
- flame-retardant clothing made from cotton or wool (no synthetics)
- high-top leather boots
- welding gloves (hot gloves)
- welding goggles
- welding jacket
- welding mask.
