Overview
High-pressure boilers, advanced control systems, and water treatment are just a few of the critical topics you’ll explore in this Third Class Power Engineering B1 course. This course will give you the specialized knowledge to operate and maintain complex boiler systems and prepares you for the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) Third Class A3 certification exam.
Through instructor-supported online learning, you’ll gain a deep understanding of boiler construction, heat transfer, burner systems, pressure vessels, and pump operations. You’ll also develop essential skills in welding inspection, draft control, and water treatment.
Whether you’re working toward your third class certification or simply expanding your technical expertise, this course provides job-relevant insights that align with industry standards. If you complete all four third class power engineering courses, you may also qualify for partial credit toward the work experience required for certification.
This course is ideal if you:
- are preparing for the Third Class Power Engineering B1 exam and need structured, exam-focused learning
- hold a valid Class Four Power Engineering Certificate of Competency and are looking for advanced industry-relevant training
- plan to complete the SAIT Third Class Power Engineering Certificate and seek to earn partial credit toward ABSA certification requirements.
To be eligible to register for this course, you must:
- be a holder of a valid Provincial Power Engineering Fourth Class Certificate.
- complete all fourth-class power engineering courses - proof of completion is required.
To be successful in this program, it is recommended you have a minimum of Grade 12 Math, Physics and English. If you have not completed these courses, consider taking an Academic Upgrading course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:
- describe the design, construction, and operation of water tube boilers
- describe the design, construction, and operation of special boilers
- explain code requirements and construction methods for large boilers
- explain the purpose and design of boiler heat transfer components
- describe the design and operation of high-pressure boiler fittings
- describe the components of burners and fuel supply systems
- describe the equipment used for boiler draft, flue gas, and ash handling
- explain the components and operation of boiler control systems
- describe procedures for operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers
- discuss internal water treatment control, testing, and monitoring explain boiler water pre-treatment
- describe the design, principles, and operation of pumps
