Overview

Executing a deep energy retrofit (DER) requires both technical expertise and effective project management. Successful Execution of Deep Energy Retrofits is the final course in the Deep Energy Retrofit certificate and provides hands-on, practical experience to bring retrofit plans to life.

You'll develop skills to manage and coordinate projects, engage with homeowners, schedule materials and permits, and maintain site safety. The course emphasizes applying building science principles during installation of walls, foundations, roofs, attic assemblies, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, while ensuring quality workmanship and proper control layer continuity. You'll also gain experience in commissioning systems, conducting post-retrofit evaluations, and educating homeowners on operation and maintenance for successful handover.

In this advanced course, you'll participate in 40 hours of learning in-person over one week, blending structured theory sessions with hands-on lab activities. Practical exercises, demonstrations, and guided practice will help you translate planning knowledge into real-world skills.

This course is ideal if you:

  • work in residential construction, renovation, or design and want to develop practical execution skills
  • are preparing to lead or coordinate projects on site
  • need hands-on skills for quality control, system commissioning, and homeowner engagement
  • are aiming to work in roles such as DER Planner, Site Manager, Energy Advisor, or Home Inspector, applying comprehensive skills across planning and execution.

You must complete SNRG 007 - Deep Energy Retrofit Planning before registering for this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • apply proper management strategies to successfully execute a Deep Energy Retrofit (DER)
  • apply proper building science principles during installation/Quality Control
  • complete appropriate commissioning and hand-over practices for a DER project.
