Overview
Deep energy retrofit decisions across the building envelope and home systems affect one another. A detailed plan helps teams coordinate requirements, costs, sequencing, and homeowner priorities before work begins.
This micro-credential course focuses on detailed residential retrofit planning. You’ll coordinate information from technical professionals, evaluate products and systems for walls, foundations, roofs, attics, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, and apply building science principles. You’ll also use performance-modelling results and cost estimates to refine project scope, consider home electrification, and organize single-stage or multi-stage work.
Over three weeks, you’ll complete 24 hours of online self-study and instructor-led virtual sessions. Discussions, assignments, and applied exercises connect technical information with design, cost, and sequencing decisions.
By completion, you’ll be prepared to develop a coordinated plan for upgrades to the building envelope and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. You’ll refine the plan by balancing performance objectives, costs, implementation timing, and homeowner goals.
This course is ideal if you:
- work in residential construction, renovation, or design and want to strengthen your retrofit-planning skills
- are preparing to lead or coordinate deep energy retrofit projects
- need to integrate building systems, technical information, costs, and homeowner priorities into one plan
- want to develop practical single-stage or multi-stage retrofit strategies.
There are no prerequisites. To support your learning, we strongly recommend completing SNRG 006 Assessing Homes for Deep Energy Retrofits first.
Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:
- engage appropriate professionals to capture required information from an existing home to inform the detailed planning for a deep energy retrofit (DER)
- utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential wall assemblies (including windows / doors)
- utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential foundation assemblies
- utilize appropriate products and systems to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential roof and attic assemblies
- utilize appropriate technologies and products to prepare a detailed plan for retrofitting residential mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
- iterate between design, performance modelling, homeowner priorities and cost to optimize and finalize a DER plan.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.
