Overview

Develop the contact lens competencies you need to excel on your National Alliance of Canadian Optician Regulators (NACOR) licensing exam. In this comprehensive 3-hour course, you'll bridge the gap between your industry experience and educational foundation as you prepare for NACOR, exploring advanced hard and soft lens design and fitting techniques.

You'll tackle special considerations and modifications for unique ocular conditions that'll challenge your problem-solving skills. Every learning outcome aligns with the entry-level competencies set by NACOR, ensuring you're fully prepared for professional practice.

To be eligible to take this course, you must have a SAIT Optician Diploma or equivalent certification from the College of Opticians of Alberta.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • practice recognizing, identifying and naming eye pathologies as well as contact lens fitting anomalies
  • calculate fitting parameters for RGP fitting case scenarios, as well as determine the ideal power of soft lenses. They will practice with the manual keratometer to ensure competency
  • measure the back vertex power of soft contact lenses, as well as the back vertex power and diameter of gas-permeable lenses
  • confirm competency in the insertion and removal of RGP lenses. Demonstrate how to clean both soft and hard lenses, and demonstrate how to reveal the patient's palpebral conjunctiva
  • apply knowledge to theoretical case scenarios of contact lens patients with potential conditions and the potential causes of the problem. You'll practice a 6-month follow-up as well as slit lamp illuminations, including parallelpiped, specular reflection, direct retro-illumination from the iris, sclerotic scatter, and conical beam
