Overview

Learn to respond to emergencies quickly while reducing risks in challenging driving conditions with our Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) driver preparation course.

Led by our industry-experienced instructors, you'll gain a deep understanding of current Alberta-specific legislation, master the art of emergency vehicle pre-inspection, and become skilled at navigating and responding to various road conditions and potential hazards. With a focus on advanced driving maneuvers, this course ensures that EMRs and other first responders are thoroughly prepared to drive with confidence and competence.

This course is ideal if you are:

  • planning on completing the SAIT EMR Certificate of Achievement
  • a first responder looking to refresh or deepen your knowledge of current Alberta driving regulations.

This course is one of four required courses in our Emergency Medical Responder Certificate of Achievement. What you'll learn is an integral part of the entry into practice with the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR).

You must provide documented proof that you are at least 18 years old and hold, at minimum, a probationary Class 5-Graduated Driver's Licence (GDL) to register for this course.

You will be responsible for your transportation to and from the SE Calgary lab site.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • understand federal and provincial acts and regulations that pertain to operating an ambulance in Alberta
  • perform a vehicle inspection
  • proactively, offensively and defensively share the road with other drivers
  • demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the transportation of dangerous goods
  • operate an ambulance under differing road conditions at differing times of day and times of year
  • perform ambulance-specific driving techniques and maneuvers
  • actively avoid collisions.

You are expected to be on time and attend and participate in all classes for an optimal learning and job-ready experience. All coursework must be completed as outlined in the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

To work as a designated EMR professional in Alberta, you must be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACoP) and hold an active practice permit.

You must complete the registration application process, including examination, within one year of having completed the EMR Certificate of Achievement program.

This course is a mandatory requirement from the ACoP to obtain your EMR certification and enables you to take your COPR exam.

Oki, Âba wathtech, Danit'ada, Tawnshi, Hello.

SAIT is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney.

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
