Important

SAIT’s AutoCAD Certificate curriculum is updated annually to align with the AutoCAD version released in the same calendar year. Because new software is typically released in the spring, program content reflects that version beginning each September. When purchasing textbooks from the SAIT Bookstore, select the edition that matches the AutoCAD version for your course section.

Overview

Gain practical, industry-recognized AutoCAD skills that form the foundation of professional drafting and design work. SAIT’s AutoCAD Certificate of Completion includes four courses that take you from core drafting principles to producing 2D drawings and introductory 3D models using Autodesk® AutoCAD® software.

You’ll learn how drawings communicate design intent, then translate sketches into precise 2D geometry using layers, blocks, hatching, text, and dimensions. You’ll build efficiency with snapping tools, parametric constraints, reusable symbols, templates, and viewports. You’ll also learn to read and share information through external references and named views. In the final course, you’ll step into 3D — creating solids and surfaces, editing in 3D space, applying visual styles and lighting, and producing multi-view drawings and renderings.

You’ll complete the program fully online and at your own pace, following a recommended weekly structure. Although self-paced, you’ll be supported by an industry-experienced instructor who’s available to answer questions, provide feedback, and assess your work. Each course includes guided exercises, short assignments, and applied projects that reflect standard drafting workflows. You’ll also create a portfolio-ready piece in each course to showcase your progress to employers.

By the end of the program, you’ll be able to create accurate 2D drawings, set up layouts for plotting, organize complex files with blocks and layers, model simple 3D parts, and present your work professionally.

This program is ideal if you:

  • want to develop practical drafting skills for roles in architecture, engineering, construction, or manufacturing
  • are an interior, product, or industrial designer who needs to produce clear, measurable drawings
  • work in a studio or small business and need to prototype, document, or communicate designs
  • are reskilling or upskilling for CAD technician or junior designer positions.

Autodesk and AutoCAD are registered trademarks or trademarks of Autodesk, Inc., in the USA and/or other countries.

There are no prerequisites or eligibility requirements for this program. Any prior education or work experience will be an asset. However, we strongly recommend that you have at least 50% in Math 30-1. If you haven’t completed this high school course, consider taking an equivalent through Academic Upgrading first.

Upon successful completion of this program, you'll be able to:

  • create and edit 2D drawings and basic 3D models using AutoCAD tools and commands
  • apply industry drafting standards, conventions, and workflows to produce accurate technical documentation
  • organize and manage design files using layers, blocks, templates, and external references
  • interpret and prepare technical drawings and layouts that clearly communicate design intent
  • generate visualizations and multi-view drawings to present and document design projects.
