Overview

Railway safety begins from the tracks up. As an inspector tasked with checking tracks, you know that each defect can potentially cause expensive delays, or in worst-case scenarios, fatal accidents. This in-depth full-day Track Inspection Level II course explores what you need to know to confidently analyze track conditions, remain in regulatory compliance, and keep things in motion.

Designed for rail personnel responsible for track safety and reporting, this course covers everything from basic inspections to evaluating switches, frogs, guard rails, and turnouts. You’ll also explore track geometry, vegetation management, drainage evaluation, and defect note-taking. Through this detailed in-person learning, you’ll gain a firm understanding of industry regulations and the ability to apply them effectively to real-world inspections.

Aligning with safety and inspection regulations set by Alberta Transportation, B.C. Safety Authority, Saskatchewan Transportation, and Manitoba Transportation, this course ensures you meet industry standards and compliance requirements.

This course is ideal if you:

  • want an increased ability to detect faults in tracks before these become full-fledged issues
  • are charged with undertaking frequent inspections and turnout tests in railway work
  • must remain current with provincial laws and standards in the industry
  • seek to gain functional testing experience related to your work.

Please note: This course is located at the Point Trotter satellite campus in SE Calgary.

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  • develop competency in inspecting track conditions, geometry, and defects
  • understand the importance of drainage, vegetation control, and ballast maintenance
  • perform inspections of turnouts, switches, frogs, and guard rails
