Overview
Successful oil and gas exploration starts with understanding where and how reservoirs form. SAIT’s Petroleum Geology – Basic course provides the technical knowledge and practical skills to assess rock formations, interpret reservoir data, and apply industry-standard exploration techniques that contribute to resource development.
Through interactive online learning, you’ll gain genuine insight into the real-world methods used in oil and gas discovery. You’ll study the earth’s crust, sedimentary rock formations, and hydrocarbon generation. You’ll explore geophysical data, geological mapping, and exploration target selection, learning how reservoirs are identified and developed. Finally, you’ll cover seismic surveys, gravity and magnetic studies, and geochemical techniques.
Designed for industry newcomers and professionals looking to expand their expertise in petroleum geology, this course offers an accessible entry point for those seeking careers in exploration, production, and energy-related roles.
This course is ideal if you:
- want to build a strong foundation in petroleum geology for a career in energy or natural resources
- work in or plan to enter oil and gas exploration, production, or related technical fields
- are seeking practical knowledge of reservoir formation, geological mapping, and exploration techniques.
Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be able to:
- identify and describe the different rock types
- describe the structure of the earth’s crust
- identify the properties of sedimentary reservoir rocks
- understand the properties of an oil or gas reservoir
- discuss mapping of geological information
- describe how geophysical data is used to identify and develop reservoirs
- escribe how geological data is used to identify and develop reservoirs
- identify how data is used in the selection of proposed exploration targets.
