Overview

In partnership with Carson Dunlop & Associates, SAIT offers a training program that provides you with the technical skills and expertise to conduct visual exams of residential building areas and prepare written reports on the physical and operational condition of homes and housing units.

You'll develop practical communication skills and knowledge of professional conduct and industry standards of practice to become successful home inspectors in this growing industry. This comprehensive, easy-to-follow certificate program is designed for self-paced learning.

Upon successful completion of this certificate, you'll be able to:

  • describe the leading systems and components of a house or housing unit, including roofing, structure, electrical, heating, air conditioning/heat pumps, plumbing, interiors and exteriors
  • understand the function and operational principles of the systems and components in a residential housing unit
  • identify common problems, failure modes and the life expectancies of various systems
  • understand why problems occur and the implications when the system malfunctions or breaks down
  • perform requisite home inspection activities and operational tests to meet industry standards of practice
  • describe the home inspection process, communicate inspection findings to the client and prepare a written report.

Program outline

To successfully complete this certificate program, you are required to complete a total of ten mandatory courses. You must complete INSP 001 before taking the other courses listed below.

How to apply for this certificate

Once you have registered for any course offered in this certificate, you will be automatically eligible to complete the certificate. You will have up to three years to complete this program. You may track your progression by signing in to your Continuing Education student account.

Certifications and professional designations

Upon successful completion of all the required courses in this certificate program, you’ll receive an electronically issued SAIT Certificate of Achievement and transcript.

You’ll be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account. Please note parchments are not issued for individual courses.

SAIT is an approved educational provider of Home Inspection training. This certificate can be used as proof of education to apply for a Home Inspector license through the Government of Alberta.

Costs

This program consists of ten courses with varying fees. Fees include access to all course-related materials and resources found in Brightspace (D2L).

We are situated in an area the Blackfoot tribes traditionally called Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. We now call it the city of Calgary, which is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta.
