Babies and their caregivers work on rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backwards, front and back floats with recovery, and shallow water entries and exits.

Swimmers work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim two metres upon completion.

In Crocodile, swimmers further develop the front and back glide with kick, front and back swim with a PFD in deep water, and swim 10 metres continuously. In Whale, swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with kick, learn the sitting dive, and will be able to swim 15 metres continuously upon completion of the level.

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, and whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metres swim.

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, and whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. An introduction to safe boating skills and ice safety is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metres swim.

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), ice safety and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1.5 minutes. Endurance is built through a 75 metres swim.

In Swim Kids 7 swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50 metres), and elementary backstroke (25 metres), learn to front scull, perform whip kick on the front, learn stride entry and swim 150 metres continuously.

In Swim Kids 8 swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (75 metres), learn breaststroke (25 metres) eggbeater kick, perform feet-first surface and standing shallow dives, and swim 300 metres continuously.

In Swim Kids 9 swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100 metres), elementary backstroke (50 metres) and breaststroke (25 metres), learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dive, and swim 400 metres continuously.

In Swim Kids 10, swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100 metres), elementary backstroke (50 metres) and breaststroke (50 metres), learn sidestroke (25 metres), perform dolphin kick (vertical), learn feet- and head-first surface dives with underwater swim, and swim 500 metres continuously.

Red Cross private swim lessons

Private swim lessons are available for all ages and skill levels. Lessons are geared for those who would like more one on-one-attention to improve their skills.

Youth swim group

In this course, swimmers work on developing competitive level swim skills. Endurance, as well as technique, will be emphasized. This non-evaluative program readies swimmers to enter a swim club, enrol in lifesaving courses, and become a better recreational swimmer. This new programming will also offer an optional Junior Lifesaving Component, swimmers must be able to swim 25 meters unassisted to participate.

Trojans Junior Lifeguard Club

Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) is a program developed by the lifesaving society for kids 8 years old and up who love the water and want more than lessons and adults of all ages looking to improve their swimming skills in a fun way. JLC also offers participants that wish to have the ability to showcase their skills in competition.

Bronze Medallion AQUA 131 See upcoming dates and register
Bronze Medallion is the first step to becoming a lifeguard and teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles

Pre-requisite: 13 years of age on the first day of class, or successful completion of Bronze Star, and the ability to swim.

Bronze Cross AQUA 133 See upcoming dates and register
Bronze Cross is the second step in becoming a lifeguard. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Bronze Medallion.

Get both courses done in one week! Due to the intense nature of this course, strong swim skills and Standard First Aid are recommended.

National Lifeguard is a nationally recognized lifeguard certification and the final step in becoming a lifeguard.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of a Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid, and 16 years of age on the first day of class.

Lifesaving/Swim Instructor Recertification AQUA 120 See upcoming dates and register
The Swim / Lifesaving Instructor Recertification Course evaluates instructor skills, provides updates to programming, and allows an opportunity for instructors to give feedback to the Lifesaving Society. Candidates need to bring their old award, swimming resources, and swimming gear for the wet portion.

Prerequisite: Proof of certification must be presented to the instructor.

National Lifeguard (NL) Recertification AQUA 126 See upcoming dates and register
NL recertification tests all NL skill items and provides any updated information. NL candidates must recertify their award prior to its two-year expiry date for it to remain active. Candidates whose award is past the two year period may still recertify if they have held the award in the past five years.

Prerequisite: Proof of certification must be presented to the instructor.

Instructors participate in a water session and receive new program update information pertaining to Red Cross Swim Programs. The water safety instructor recertification is designed to ensure quality and standards are maintained.
Upon successful completion of the Water Safety Instructor course, you'll be certified to teach the Red Cross Water Safety Program. The course includes seven weeks of mandatory teaching experience hours.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age, successful completion of Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Emergency First Aid, OR Bronze Cross.
