Dual credit for a job well done
Education has never been one-size-fits all — now more than ever, SAIT is finding ways to satisfy the modern student's need for options and efficiency.
Close to 100 high school students are on campus this semester earning post-secondary certificates in SAIT's five dual-credit programs: Pharmacy Assistant Certificate, Pre-Employment Carpentry, Pre-Employment Plumbing, Production Field Operations and Management 200.
Their work here at SAIT provides an advantage in starting their post-secondary journeys and earns them credits towards their high school diplomas.
Greg Michaud, Associate Vice President of SAIT's Learner Services, says a dual-credit education also helps smooth the transition from high school to post-secondary and from post-secondary to the workforce.
"Getting students onto campus prepares them for the post-secondary experience," he says. "Dual credit helps get the right students into the right programs — it gives them a chance to find out where they fit."
Engage early for a plum experience
Since dual-credit programs are funded through the Alberta government and industry support, students can explore career options — and the education that will get them there — without investing tuition fees.
Doug Reid, SAIT Pipes Trades Instructor and dual-credit Pre-Employment Plumbing Instructor, says his dual-credit students are eager to learn.
"It's quite rewarding to see young people interested in the trades," says Reid. "They're here because they want to be — even if they don't continue in this specific field, the experience they're getting is invaluable."
Many of SAIT's current Pre-Employment Plumbing students say the opportunity to gain experience, education and certification was just too good to pass up. Here's what else they had to say about why they signed up for dual credit:
