Three big birthdays add up to a big gift for students

TD Bank Group is marking three historic milestones with a generous gift of $200,000 to SAIT and the UofC.

TD Bank Group is marking three historic milestones with a generous gift of $200,000 to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the University of Calgary.  The funds will equip post-secondary students with the skills they need to build a brighter future for Calgary and Canada.

"TD is proud to support two of Calgary's outstanding educational institutions, and celebrate their unique contributions to our nation," says Brian Gervais, SVP Prairie Region. "TD has a long history of supporting higher education, as we believe it has the power to not only create opportunity, but contribute to the long-term well-being of students, their families and Canadian communities. The funds will be dedicated to financial literacy and environmental studies, and we are thrilled to contribute to the education of Canada's future leaders."

The joint gift commemorates two landmark anniversaries for the institutions - SAIT's 100th birthday and the University of Calgary's 50th anniversary, which took place during the 2016/2017 academic year. The occasions also coincide with Canada's sesquicentennial, 150 years of confederation.

Each institution will receive $100,000, with SAIT's portion creating an entrance award and several annual scholarships for students in the Bachelor of Business Administration program in SAIT's School of Business. The U of C will establish the TD Bank Group Award in Sustainability Studies and fund special projects in the Sustainability Studies program.

"For 100 years, SAIT has prospered because of its partnerships with industry and the community. TD's support and investment in our School of Business affords students an education they may not have had access to" says David Ower, Dean of SAIT's School of Business. This gift is a tremendous way to cap off our centennial year, and it sets the stage for our second century of graduates to make a significant impact on Canada's business community."

Donors honour 100 years of SAIT

A number of donors left their permanent mark on the SAIT campus with an inscribed brick on a wall in front of Heritage Hall.

Our centennial inspired philanthropy throughout the year from the extended SAIT family. The past 12 months marked a number of initiatives that will contribute to the success of our students including:

  • About 950 donors made generous contributions to create the Centennial Fund, currently at $115,000. It establishes a new annual award that will provide $3,500 to a student with demonstrated financial need and who writes and essay that addresses our centennial themes of SAIT Cares, Inspires and Celebrates. Many of the contributors are alumni who responded to our Student Caller Program.
  • The Second Century Fund was created by staff and faculty through our annual SAIT Family Campaign. Our staff contributed $10,000 to create a $1,000 entrance award that will go to a student with demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and who can speak to the reason why he or she chose SAIT for their particular program.
  • A number of donors left their permanent mark on the SAIT campus with an inscribed brick on a wall in front of Heritage Hall. This year about 400 donors contributed $100 each to inscribe a brick. Their contributions support the SAIT Opportunities Fund for students and programs.
