Students vote for new SAITSA headquarters
The SAIT student voice is strong. The results of a SAIT Student Association (SAITSA) referendum are in and students voted "yes" for a new SAITSA headquarters.
The new student building will help SAITSA meet its 2015-18 Strategic Plan goal of student space expansion. Brigitte Matheson, SAITSA President, is looking forward to what a multi-purpose student building on campus will mean for the student experience.
"SAITSA is so excited and this is a huge opportunity for us," says Matheson.
"I think the building will spark more life on campus and will be a place that fosters a sense of community where students of any program — regardless of what school they're in — can go and just be."
More than an HQ
While the new SAITSA HQ will house the student association's offices, the building will also have study spaces, retail locations, a tech shop, a possible new Gateway location and maybe even a nap room.
"What I'm really excited about is the student activity lounge," says Matheson. "I think that will be a really big draw for students."
New possibilities for Campus Centre
With the news of SAITSA's HQ building comes the question of Campus Centre. In the spring, SAIT held info sessions and fielded a survey about renovations to the building — including the fate of the pool.
With the growth plans for SAITSA in place, SAIT has the opportunity to evaluate options for Campus Centre.
"This is an exciting continuation of the growth that makes SAIT a top choice for students, employees and partners every year," says Maureen MacDonald, Associate Vice President, Communications and Marketing.
"With a new building for SAITSA on the horizon, SAIT will re-examine the options for development of the Campus Centre facilities that were presented to employees and students in the spring."
