Government of Canada invests in applied education at SAIT
Calgary, AB — SAIT Polytechnic got a boost from Western Economic Diversification for projects designed to enhance skills development and applied research. Close to $600,000 in federal funding was announced today by the Honourable Michelle Rempel.
Federal funding of more than $291,000 will enable Innovate Calgary to establish the Kinetica Innovation Centre at SAIT, in partnership with the University of Calgary. The centre, located in SAIT's Applied Research and Innovation Services area, will allow high-tech start-up companies to develop innovative technological solutions for the energy sector, accelerate commercialization opportunities, and engage students to participate in industry-relevant projects.
"Our Government recognizes the important role that innovation plays in creating jobs and economic growth," says Minister Rempel. "By investing in the collaborative work of these institutions we are not only helping to develop sophisticated technological solutions, we are also preparing students for skilled positions in the future."
A second investment of more than $297,000 will support SAIT in the development of 3D virtual training modules for skilled trade workers. This project — through the School of Manufacturing and Automation — will allow students to access training through a blended classroom and online distance learning experience.
President and CEO of SAIT Polytechnic, Dr. David Ross, says SAIT is proud to be part of these collaborative projects.
"Western Economic Diversification recognizes the value of industry partnership and applied education — two of SAIT's key institutional priorities," says Dr. Ross. "Through their support, SAIT can continue to elevate the learning experience for our students and set them up for successful careers."
