SAIT Polytechnic is Top Research College in Canada
Calgary, AB — SAIT Polytechnic is the number one research college in the country. The recognition came today as the new Top 50 Research Colleges list was released by RE$EARCH Infosource Inc. as part of Canada's Innovation Leaders 2013.
Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) was created at SAIT 10 years ago as a gateway for industry, students and faculty to collaborate on projects.
"This is a significant recognition for SAIT Polytechnic and an important milestone for applied research in Canada," says Dr. David Ross, President and CEO of SAIT Polytechnic. "Collaboration is the cornerstone of our model. SAIT students and instructors work alongside industry partners, supported by investments from both the federal and provincial government, to turn ideas into real-world, practical solutions."
The areas of applied research at SAIT are market-driven and the result is projects in RFID applications development, environmental technologies, green building technologies, alternative energy, sustainable culinary operations, and sports and wellness technologies.
"This is our inaugural college ranking and it is a pleasure to see SAIT leading the charge on college research," says Ron Freedman, CEO of RE$EARCH Infosource Inc. "SAIT's performance at the top of our ranking is a testament to the value it is providing to Alberta and the country. These are early days for college research and we're pleased to help highlight the good work that SAIT and its counterparts across the country are doing."
In the past five years alone, close to 200 industry-driven, applied-research projects carried out at SAIT have resulted in the development of more than 250 prototypes.
Each year, between 150 and 200 students are directly involved in applied research projects with industry — translating what they've learned in the classroom into real applications.
"Working on an applied research project is in some ways like a job interview," says Dr. Alex Zahavich, Director of ARIS at SAIT. "Our students often continue working with the industry partner on the applied research initiative after graduation - their productivity as an employee is almost instantaneous."
SAIT shares this recognition with many partners and funders, including NSERC, Alberta Innovates, RBC Foundation and Enerplus. An early adopter and supporter of ARIS, Enerplus provided the largest corporate donation ever made to SAIT Polytechnic.
The new Top 50 Research Colleges ranking joins other categories including the Top 50 Research Universities, Top 40 Research Hospitals and the Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders.
