SAIT’s President one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women
Calgary, AB — SAIT President and CEO Irene Lewis has been recognized as one of Canada's Most Powerful Women for the second time.
Lewis was in Toronto yesterday as the Women's Executive Network hosted the 2012 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards. She first received the award in 2010.
Lewis — recognized in the Public Sector Leaders category — became president of SAIT in 1998. In her time, she has elevated SAIT from Calgary's "trade school on the hill" to an internationally‐known and respected polytechnic.
"It's a great honour to receive such a prestigious recognition," says Lewis, "and it is one I share with my SAIT colleagues. Leading SAIT through an exciting period of growth and expansion has been extremely rewarding. Together we have constructed world‐class facilities, improved employee engagement and increased academic options for students."
Lewis was the driving force behind the new $400 million Trades and Technology Complex, which opened in August 2012, and its $100 million capital campaign. A respected ambassador for Alberta's postsecondary community, Lewis is known for her talent in building relationships. That was evidenced in 2010 when SAIT received a $15‐million gift in support of the new Complex — the largest personal philanthropic donation ever given to a Canadian community college or polytechnic institution.
The Public Sector Leaders Award is one of eight categories in the Top 100 Awards. This category recognizes women who hold senior positions in Canada's public sector organizations and examines how they manage their organization, their vision and leadership, corporate performance and community service.
Lewis is a mentor through the Women's Executive Top 100 program and a highly sought‐after speaker at conferences and events. She will retire in March 2013 after nearly 15 years at the helm of the institution.
Tune in to CTV Morning Live at 7:05 am on Monday, Dec. 10 to watch the interview with Lewis on her Top 100 recognition.
