Trades and Technology Complex awarded double recognition from Project Management Institute

Calgary, AB — SAIT Polytechnic's Trades and Technology Complex has been recognized as the Project of the Year in two distinct categories from the Project Management Institute (PMI) Southern Alberta Charter — the first ever double win by a project from PMI-SAC.

The $400 million expansion on SAIT's main campus was given the top award in both the Engineering and Construction and Community Advancement categories. The complex is the first project ever to be selected as a finalist in two categories by PMI-SAC.

Project Manager for the Trades and Technology Complex at SAIT Polytechnic, John Millington, says it's an honour to be recognized in both categories.

"Community advancement was a top priority and many aspects of the complex involved revitalization initiatives to specifically improve the neighbouring community's access through campus to sports facilities and the C-train platform," says Millington. "Overall it was a very complex construction project that involved 2.5 million man hours to construct and up to 700 workers per day."

The 740,000-square-foot Trades and Technology Complex is the largest construction project in SAIT's 96-year history. The complex has the potential capacity for an additional 8,100 full and part-time students each year, focusing on the high demand sectors of energy, construction, and manufacturing and automation. Alberta is facing a looming worker shortage and the provincial government estimates 19,000 people retire each year and by 2021, up to 114,000 people will be needed to fill positions.

Beyond the state-of-the-art classrooms, learning was built right into the complex. Exposed duct work and HVAC systems aren't hidden behind drywall, but are part of the natural beauty of the building and allow students to best understand the systems they are learning in the classroom. One set of passenger elevators in both the new Aldred Centre and Johnson- Cobbe Energy Centre buildings has glass-front panels to showcase the mechanical functions of the elevators.

The Trades and Technology Complex has also been named one of the most innovative and exciting urban infrastructure projects in the world, according to KPMG's Infrastructure 100: World Cities Edition publication.

The complex officially opened Sept. 5, 2012.
