Thane G. Russell

Thane G. Russell, P.Eng., has almost 30 years of engineering experience in the petroleum industry, primarily in production operations, drilling and completions, and well optimization. Thane has a particular interest in the innovation and commercialization of completion tools.

Thane grew up in Ontario and received a Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA. In 1985, he set out for Alberta and has lived there since. His first ten years in the oil and gas industry were focused on gaining practical field experience with a number of companies including Texaco, Imperial Oil and Canadian Hunter.

In 1995, Thane and several partners founded Stellarton Energy Limited, which was sold to Tom Brown Resources of Denver in 2000. Secure Oil Tools, the wholly owned completion products division of Stellarton was sold to Schlumberger in 1999.

In 2000, Thane founded Absolute Energy Limited and is currently the Chairman and Vice President Absolute Completion Technologies Ltd. (ACT), which was founded in 2002.

Since 2002, Thane has consulted to production and services companies worldwide on well completion strategies for flow control and sand control. He is a member of the Society Of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and has presented technical papers at various SPE and Heavy Oil Conferences, and holds several patents.

"I am very proud to see that technologies we have developed in Canada have been adopted around the world," he says. "Especially to see that the products that we designed and developed work very well - it is just a thrill."

When not "on the job" for ACT, Thane spends most of his free time working for his wife Kerri on their horse and cattle ranch north of Cochrane. Thane and Kerri have two children - Paige (now a Senior at Texas A&M University), and Matthew (currently in his second year at Mount Royal University).

"I have been very fortunate in my life," says Thane. "I do work that I enjoy, with people that I respect and admire. I rarely have to wear a tie. I have a family that loves me, and that I love in return. I own a good dog. Now - if I can only live long enough to see the Toronto Maple Leafs win another Stanley Cup, all my dreams will have come true!"
